Description

Thought lost for 20 years after a house fire destroyed a large chunk of footage, Cameron McCulloch’s debut has, like a filmmaking phoenix, been resurrected from the ashes thanks to long months spent in the 2020-21 lockdowns, in what was a veritable COVID miracle.

In her film debut, Kestie Morassi (Wolf Creek, Black Snow) plays Kim, a small-time scam artist desperate to move up the ranks of Melbourne’s seedy criminal underworld. However, she faces stiff competition from Ben (Stuart Orr), her crime boss father’s newly anointed apprentice.

A loving ode to the ’90s new wave of crime films spawned by Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs, Scam was made with a mere $5,000 budget and a cast of unknowns (including eventual Melbourne film identities like cult auteur Nathan Hill and radio host and film festival honcho Thomas Caldwell)! Interlaced with hilarious one-liners, a masturbating clown and a horde of pop culture references that will bring a tear to the eye of anyone who grew up in the ’90s / early 2000s, Scam is the kind of film not often made in Australia, a funny, subversive, violent, action-comedy about the lives of criminals and cops.
